Tilak Ceremony

One of the most important pre-wedding rituals is the Tilak Ceremony. Tilak is usually held at the Groom’s residence. The bride’s father offers gifts ranging from fruits to clothes, goods and sweets to the groom and his family. The groom’s father sends rice, coconut, clothes, jewelry and henna to the bride’s family in exchange. The ceremony is the first step towards strengthening the relationship between the two families.

Lagun

Lagun is a formal invitation in the form of lagun patrika or as some locals may say ‘Peeli Chitthi’. The bride’s family sends this invitation to the groom’s family along with clothes, sweets, dry fruits, fruits and other auspicious goods.

Rat Jaga

This ritual is performed at night after the Haldi ceremony. All the ladies of the neighborhood gather at bride’s home to sing traditional wedding songs about getting married. The rhythmic playing of dholak and several other instruments fills the house with positivity and exuberance.

Mandap Ki Rasam

The elder male member of the groom’s family sets up the mandap. After this, both sides of the family exchange gift, fruits, gold, money, etc. All the important ceremonies including Pooja Phere, Kanyadaan takes place on this mandap.

Tilhari Poojan

This ceremony is usually performed by seven ladies who apply haldi on the bride and give her blessings. These ladies are called ‘Tilhari’ by the locals. They all wear yellow clothes and tie the auspicious red thread on their wrist. After the vidai of the bride, they all sit around the mandap and eat especially prepared currychawal.
